Starting from Mantua train station, take the cycle path along via Pitentino to the left, go under the railway bridge, turn left first and then right to cross the footbridge by the lakeside of Lago Superiore. Go past the harbour of Canottieri Mincio Boat Club and turn left into via San Giovanni Bono; at the end of the road, stay on the right side and follow the cycle path as it skirts the fields and leads to Gambarara district (km. 2.5).
A LITTLE FURTHER ON PROCEED WITH CARE WHEN CROSSING THE MUNICIPAL ROAD TO SOAVE VILLAGE. Road signs will guide bikers on the embankment of the man-made Diversivo del Mincio canal (km. 5). A little further on, a bridge on the right side goes to the Natural Reserve of Bosco della Fontana (diversion 1) Once back on the Canale Diversivo keep going north and after 3.5 km, near Soave bridge, you find a fork: go straight on and reach the hamlets of Maglio, Sacca di Goito, Rivalta sul Mincio and Grazie with its evocative sanctuary (diversion 2); or turn right and past the bridge, take the main path to the left towards Peschiera, skirting the Pozzolo- Maglio drain (km. 9.3).
IN THIS STRETCH MIND THE TRAFFIC AND THE CROSSROADS WITH MUNICIPAL ROADS.
The cycle route proceeds under the SP ex SS236 road to Brescia called “Goitese”, and crosses the cycle path to Marmirolo on the right (diversion 1).
Go straight on, and then go under the SP17 road “Postumia” not far from the hamlet of Marengo (km 16.5). If you turn left after a few kilometres you can visit the tiny hamlet of Massimbona (diversion 3), an ancient water mill of the XIII-XIV century and a Romanesque little church.
Back to the main route go ahead until you reach the hamlet of Pozzolo (km. 24.1). Cycling along the opposite riverbank you can notice the old Mulini (mills) di Volta, and further on, you can reach the village of Volta Mantovana through a cycling bridge (diversion 4).
The path leads to the ancient village of Borghetto (km. 30.1) in the district of Verona; cycling along gentle slopes you can reach Monzambano (km. 35.1). CROSS THE BRIDGE WITH CARE. From here you may divert (km. 7) and reach the Natural Reserve of Castellaro Lagusello, a charming medieval village overlooking a heart-shaped lake of morainic origins (diversion 5).
The cycle path leads north to the Salionze dam, regulating the water flow of the Mincio river and of Lake Garda. Across the dam on the right bank follow the towpath lined with poplars until you get to the town centre of Peschiera (km. 42,5), overlooking Lake Garda.

Risorsaturistica Palazzo Gonzaga and Italian garden Palazzo Gonzaga was built by the Marquis of Mantua, Ludovico Gonzaga, and his wife Barbara of Brandenburg as a country villa in the mid-16C. It is now the town hall and features an asymmetrical façade, with a stone portal and two rows of windows. Above the roof rise three highly original chimneystacks. The interiors are superbly crafted and with 16C ornaments. Of particular interest are the frescoes on the vaulted ceiling of the apse of the old oratory, depicting the Nativity of Mary and attributed to Teodoro Ghisi, a painter from the circle of Giulio Romano.
Risorsaturistica Ponti sul Mincio castle The few certain historic records of the castle of Ponti sul Mincio date its construction to between the 12C and 14C. Actually probably built in the 13C, it is attributed to a Scaliger initiative for whom it, along with the castles of Monzambano, Valeggio, Nogarole, Peschiera, Sirmione and others, formed a southwest defence in this area, bordering with the lands of the Visconti and Gonzaga families.
Risorsaturistica Bertone Park Centre This is a typically romantic park where visitors can admire exotic and autochthonous trees, some up to 150 years old. The woodland, beautiful views and small lake all create the ideal atmosphere for a delightful stroll. Since 1994, this park has been home to a centre for the reintroduction of the white stork. Three 19C buildings stand on a clearing, one of which, the former stables, is used as an audiovisual room and for small meetings.
Risorsaturistica Monzambano castle An old feudal road leads to this dark, forbidding castle perched on a hill. With a church inside its walls, it once offered shelter to the local population when threatened, possibly by the Magyars in the 10C. These castles were not residences for the local lords but almost certainly served as lodgings for the garrisons patrolling the area. In times of danger, the locals sought refuge inside, barricading themselves in with their animals and food supplies.
Risorsaturistica Castellaro Morainic complex nature reserve A nature reserve in the rolling hills above Lake Garda featuring perfect examples of all the typical features of moraines: small depressions with bogs and marshes, and a lake with a high degree of biodiversity, especially fish species. Various animals and birds breed near the shores of the lake and in the adjacent woodland.
Risorsaturistica Bosco della Fontana state nature reserve A biogenetic nature reserve since 1976, Bosco della Fontana is an almost flat square of woodland with sides measuring approximately 1.5 km. Almost in the middle of the forest is a 17C hunting-lodge built by Vincenzo I, Duke of Mantua. Close by is a spring, the ‘Fontana’ after which the wood is named. The reserve is also the site of the state forestry corps’ scientific research centre, which monitors the level of biodiversity in Italy’s forests.
