Medio Mantovano is the area of Mantua city and the surrounding villages.
It is a plain crossed by Mincio river and bounded by Po river on the Southern side.
It is a water-rich ground, that belongs to Mincio river natural park: small valleys between Rivalta and Grazie, Mantua lakes, Vallazza and Garzaia di Valdaro and the surrounding places from Lake Garda to Po river.
Agriculture and stock-breeding are very important: there are many typical farm produce, such as sausages, salami, cold meats and cheeses - above all Grana Padano.
Still, fish farming is also important: catfish, pikes and sturgeons are the main fish which live in the Mantuan area.
Medio Mantovano is sprinkled with historical buildings. Most of them are in Mantua, the ancient ducal town. And even today Mantua almost identifies itself with Gonzaga family's history, during that time the town became a European capital.
