Monzambano castle

An old feudal road leads to this dark, forbidding castle perched on a hill. With a church inside its walls, it once offered shelter to the local population when threatened, possibly by the Magyars in the 10C. These castles were not residences for the local lords but almost certainly served as lodgings for the garrisons patrolling the area. In times of danger, the locals sought refuge inside, barricading themselves in with their animals and food supplies.
