Risorsaturistica International Red Cross Memorial Erected to mark the centenary of the Battle of Solferino, this memorial commemorates the founder of the Red Cross and Nobel Peace Prize winner Henry Dunant (1828-1910). It bears marble plaques inscribed with the names of the 178 member nations in the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. For the last ten years, on the anniversary of the battle, delegations from around the world have gathered to participate in a torchlight peace procession, remembering the women of Solferino and Castiglione delle Stiviere who tended the wounded soldiers and their search for medicines for their injuries. From the fortress, the memorial is reached along Via San Luigi Gonzaga, flanked by cypresses.
Risorsaturistica Ponti sul Mincio castle The few certain historic records of the castle of Ponti sul Mincio date its construction to between the 12C and 14C. Actually probably built in the 13C, it is attributed to a Scaliger initiative for whom it, along with the castles of Monzambano, Valeggio, Nogarole, Peschiera, Sirmione and others, formed a southwest defence in this area, bordering with the lands of the Visconti and Gonzaga families.
Risorsaturistica The Fortress, Solferino They built it in 1022, as a watchtower on the highest Lake Garda morainal hill. In 1870 they restored it and made it a museum. Going up by its wooden stairs, you get to the observation deck; during sunny days, you can see the Alps, the Apennines and widely the Po valley from there. Inside, there are relics, paintings, battle maps and XIX century prints.
Risorsaturistica The Risorgimento Museum Founded in 1931 by the Società Solferino e San Martino, this museum stands on the edge of the Parco dell’Ossario. It preserves numerous remains, weapons and relics of the French and Austrian armies who fought here in 1859, as well as embodying part of Italian history from 1796 to 1870. Together with illustrative and documentary material, there is a rich display of weapons, uniforms, drawings, prints, and personal objects belonging to the combatants. The display is chronologically arranged in three rooms and accompanied by explanatory captions that furnish visitors with valuable cultural and educational information. Note in particular the central room, entirely devoted to the Battle fought on 24 June 1859.
