Descrizione

The three-rooms museum stands near the ancient San Pietro in Vincoli church, which today is an ossuary. They opened it in 1931. It hosts documents, relics, weapons and paintings about the 24 June 1859 battle and about independence wars in general.
A bust of Gaudenzio Carlotti, a portrait of Carlo Alberto and one of count Luigi Torelli – the founder of Società Solferino e San Martino, id est the Solferino and San Martino association – are in the first room. In a display case, you can see documents, weapons, helmets and accountrements.
The wide central room is about Solferino battle: here you can see the portraits of French generals who fought there, an Austrian smooth-bore cannon and a French rifled one. Still, there are a painting by Carlo Bossoli depicting Solferino castle and fortress, and a canvas by Malerba and Salvadori depicting the Zouave assault on the fortress. Two large display cases contains Zouave and Austrian uniforms. You can also see some devotional booklets and military record books, which were found on dead soldiers.
The third room contains a portrait of Garibaldi and one of French imperial family, weapons and very interesting documents.
