Someone once said that Alto Mantovano could be considered as a spot of Tuscany in Lombardy, because of the morainal hills South of Lake Garda.
The most beautiful place of this area is likely CASTELLARO LAGUSELLO, a medieval walled village near a small morainal lake; its XIII century castle and its marquis palace are still well-preserved.
In SOLFERINO you can see a very nice landscape and signs of the famous battle (1859), such as the ossuary and the medieval tower also known as Spia d’Italia – id est Italy's Spy: from the top of that tower French and Piedmontese staff officers watched the battle. Associazione Turistica Colline Moreniche del Garda – id est Morainal Hills Tourist Association – is in Torelli square (tel. +39 0376 893 160).
You can see some medieval ruins in PONTI SUL MINCIO and in MONZAMBANO, and you should not miss Palazzo Cavriani and Villa Venier in VOLTA MANTOVANA.
XI century Santa Maria parish church in CAVRIANA is one of the most beautiful medieval buildings in Mantua province; still, you might visit Romanesque Villa Mirra, which hosts Alto Mantovano archaeological museum.
A cycle track runs alongside Mincio river from Mantua to Peschiera, and two more cross the morainal hills.
Finally, gourmets may appreciate local quality white wines, raw ham, capunsei – a kind of dumplings made of bread and broth.
