Descrizione

Today they are known as the lands of Matilda: the stretch of land between the Po river and the bordering Emilian province.
The Canossa family worked actively on those lands, dominating the Apennine passes, and heading a powerful fortress of castles. It was  during the 11th century when they tried to monitor the Po in the easiest transit area - characterized by marshes and sandbanks. Thus, in 1012 Mantua became capital town, the heart of their possessions.  As a matter of fact, this region still provides a number of specimen of Romanesque architecture, with churches said matildic in memory of the countess.
An itinerary from the Mincio to the Po river discovering Roman art is recommended.

Risorsaturistica Church of the Assunzione della Beata Vergine Maria A parish church with celebrations on 15 August. Delightfully positioned at the foot of the bank, this former Benedictine monastery dates from the 10C. Its most important experiences are linked to Matilda of Tuscany who, after placing it under the control of Santa Croce del Lagurano di Sermide, rebuilt it in 1075 and handed it over to Polirone (San Benedetto Po). It then passed in commendam to the prelates of the Gonzaga family and, in the 15C, was given its present external appearance, a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Inside are the remains of 14C and 18C frescoes.
Risorsaturistica Church Assunzione della Beata Vergine Maria, Pieve di Coriano Attributed to the Countess Matilda of Tuscany’s construction activity, this church is actually recorded since 980 – and so precedes her times – as a parish church in the diocese of Reggio Emilia and linked to the castrensial settlement of Revere. It has a remarkable interior decorated with fine frescoes, mostly dating from the second half of the 15C and depicting St Anthony of Egypt, the Madonna Lactans, St Lucy and other saints.
