Po, the Great River

Moving around Viadana, you can appreciate archaeological sites, bog drainages and good food. Still, you can easily ride on the cycle tracks along Po riverbanks.
Some interesting churches are in VIADANA, such as Santa Maria in Castello - which hosts several XVI and XVII century paintings, among which a Bartolomeo Vivarini's polyptyc -, or San Rocco – a good example of late baroque style. Parazzi museum hosts precious Etruscan, Roman and Egyptian relics.
You may visit another archaeological museum in PIADENA, and a really peculiar bijou museum in CASALMAGGIORE.
In SAN MATTEO DELLE CHIAVICHE, the old bog drainage plant “tells” you about the relationships between the Great River and the people who lived here. In TORRE D'OGLIO there is a very rare early XX century pontoon bridge. You can easily cycle along Po and Oglio wide riverbanks.
Still, Viadana area produces lambrusco, sausages and renowned melons.

Risorsaturistica Town archeological museum Two of the rooms in this archaeology museum focus on finds from the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman period. The third room is for school activities and temporary exhibitions. Information panels show how the population in the southern Po Valley changed between prehistoric times and the Roman period. Roman artefacts, such as fine ceramic tableware, amphoras, glass oil containers and coins, help visitors gain an understanding of the history and characteristics of the vicus of Hostilia, with its port, necropolises, and town and country villas.
Risorsaturistica Pharmacopeia Museum This museum of pharmacy houses the Losa collection, part of which consists in fascinating, beautifully decorated antique wooden, glass, porcelain and majolica medicinal containers. The rest centres on old pharmaceutical documents. The finest exhibit in the collection is a magnificent series of 136 antique ceramic medicinal jars in an excellent state of preservation. Turquoise is the predominant colour and they were manufactured by workshops in Veneto (the Mainardi workshops and others in Bassano).
Risorsaturistica Galleria del Premio Suzzara museum Established in 1948 following a proposal by Dino Villani and with the backing of Cesare Zavattini, the prize was notable for its jury, comprising not only of experts but factory, office and farm workers, and for its prizes, consisting in produce of labour and the land. The prize has always favoured realism in art, with particular concern for social issues. The prize-winning paintings form a rich permanent collection that includes works by Guttuso, Sassu, Birolli, Romagnoli, Zigaina and Ligabue.
Risorsaturistica Po river II World War museum Films, photos, records and original mementoes dating from the first air raids in 1944 to the passage of the front in 1945. Felonica was in a prime position for the river crossing of the retreating German troops. Later, this area was the link between the 5th US Army and British 8th Army when they arrived at the river.
Risorsaturistica Mu.Vi. - Museo Civico Antonio Parazzi (town museum) The Civic Museum A. Parazzi has, since 2007, been housed in an early 20C complex, fully restored and forming part of the MuVi, a multi-purpose centre embracing many local cultural institutions. The museum is named after its founder, Monsignor Antonio Parazzi, a historian and archaeologist of 1823-1899, in contact with the most famous scholars of the time. He worked actively in the Viadana area and its environs and collected the materials in a museum, opened in 1880. These include finds from several periods and geographical areas as well as ceramics, pottery, old textiles, fossils. Works by the Viadana school of painting are in the picture gallery.
Risorsaturistica The Polirone monastic complex Founded in 1007 by Tedaldo of Canossa, grandfather of the celebrated Countess Matilda, on the island between the rivers Po and Lirone, the monastery played a key role in the history of monasticism via its religious, political and cultural vitality until it was suppressed by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797. The visit to the majestic complex comprises the cloisters and interiors of the Seculars and of St Simeon, the cloister of San Benedetto, the monastic refectory with a fresco by Correggio, 16C cellars containing a rich collection of decorated old farm wagons and an exhibition of archaeological finds, the Chapter House and the Museo Civico Polironeano, one of the most important ethnographic museums in Lombardy.
Risorsaturistica Po river Museum This old fortress was converted to an elegant ducal residence by the Marchese of Mantua, Ludovico II Gonzaga, who commissioned the Tuscan architect Luca Fancelli to execute it. The demo-ethno-anthropological museum is council-owned and was established in 1983. Its core themes are the river, the surrounding area and the local people. It is a living museum with a constant focus on research and a busy programme of encounters centred on the river which have culminated in two publications on shipmills.
Risorsaturistica Archaeological city museum, Pegognaga The Roman finds in this museum come from an archaeological site near the parish church of San Lorenzo, dating from the times of Matilda of Tuscany, and prove the existence of a small rural vicus on the banks of the old course of the River Po. Ceramic, glass, bronze and bone exhibits reconstruct everyday life in the Roman settlement and convey the major importance of trade linked to river traffic. The importance of the River Po is recorded on a famous capital bearing a dedication to ‘Father Po’.

Also unpublished pieces by Paisiello and Rossini and two precious fragments of parchment from the Vatican’s Rossi Codex No. 215, dating from the 14C. Fine collection of music treatises dating from the Renaissance onwards.
