Descrizione

Palazzo Te, Mantua

Palazzo Te is Giulio Romano's masterpiece in Mantua; it was built (1525-1535) as a leisure residence, on the orders of Federico II Gonzaga. Great artists, such as Primaticcio, Rinaldo Mantovano and Benedetto Pagni, helped Giulio Romano to deck it.
Its design is based on the ancient Roman villas, and, though it was restored more than once in the past, the complex still keeps its original form. But Giulio Romano was also influenced by Raphael and Michelangelo in this work.
You will surely be impressed by the courtyard of honour, Sala dei Cavalli – id est the room of horses -, Camera di Psiche – id est the room of Psyche -, Camera dei Venti – id est the room of winds -, Camera delle Aquile – id est the room of eagles -, Camera degli Stucchi – id est the room of stuccoes – and tumultuous Camera dei Giganti – id est the room of giants.

On the upper floor you can admire several collections:
- The "Arnoldo Mondadori" collection and its XIX-XX century painters, such as Federico Zandomeneghi and Armando Spadini.
- The 250 pieces "Ugo Sissa" Mesopotamian collection – one of the rarest ones in Italy.
- The Gonzaga section with ancient measures, dies, medals and coins of Mantua Duchy.
- The “Giuseppe Acerbi” Egyptian collection with marble, bronze and wooden sculptures, and funerary and religious objects.
