The building of this church, designed by Jesuit priest Luca Bienni, started in 1608, on the orders of prince Francesco Gonzaga, who was a brother of Saint Aloysius. The adjoining Jesuit college, which today is the municipality building, was built in the same period.
The church was first dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus; then it was dedicated to St. Aloysius, when they brought here from Rome the skull of the saint as a relic. The relic is still visible in a silver reliquary.
In 1761 they restored the presbytery and the dome. There is a peculiar prothyrum outside. The nave hosts monochrome paintings depicting scenes of saint Aloysius' life, and a canvas with Our Lady of Sorrows by Guercino (early XVII century).
