It was designed by Leon Battista Alberti, who died in 1472, and built by architect Luca Fancelli, who finished it in 1494. The 80 m tall dome was built by Filippo Juvarra (1733-1765).
Inside you may admire paintings by Andrea Mantegna, his pupil Antonio Allegri called Correggio, Giulio Romano and his school, Domenico Fetti, Francesco Borgani, Giorgio Anselmi, Rinaldo Mantovano, Felice Campi and Andreasino.
Anton Maria Viani designed the crypt in late XVI century: it contains the two ampullas with Christ's Blood, that legionary Longinus brought from Golgotha. The ampullas go in procession every year on Good Friday.
