Church of St. Francesco

Construction dates from 1304 but the Austrians suppressed it in 1782 and converted it to a military arsenal. Later, in 1944, overhead bombing destroyed the old building.

The church was rebuilt in Lombard Gothic style around what had survived the war destruction: the facade with three spires and a rose window, a bell-tower and, fortunately, the Gonzaga chapel with its precious 14C frescoes. The latter conserves the surviving and exceptional cycle (Life of St Louis) attributable to Modena painter Serafino de Serafini (recorded from 1349 to 1393).
