The church and annexed Dominican convent were founded by Gianfrancesco Gonzaga, Marchese of Mantua in 1429.
In 1675, the complex passed to the Franciscans, whose involvement ended in 1769 when the Austrians suppressed the renovated convent. As a result, the following year, the local population transformed the old religious construction into a parish church called the church of San Lazzaro in Santa Maria degli Angeli.
The religious place conserves its original 15C features intact, with a vertical development of the facade, pointed arches, spires and a soaring bell-tower. It is a perfect example of Lombard International Gothic style.
