This church is linked to the old monastic structure of Matilda’s times and the so-called domus hospitales pauperum (11C).
The complex stood just outside the city walls, beyond the Porta dell'Ospedale. What little survives does not allow an even partial reading of the Romanesque church and hospital complex.
Today, only a few remains of the original walls of the old building survive, plus the odd arch of the external coping. The old mediaeval structure was incorporated into a baroque design developed by Franz Geffels between 1680 and 1693.
