By tradition, this is one of the churches built on the orders of Matilda of Tuscany (1046-1115).
Its layout reminds of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, while its proximity to Sant'Andrea basilica – where the Blood of Christ is guarded – reminds of the Calvary.
They believe that the rotunda was part of a series of places of worship along the route going from Mantua boundaries to the holy relic.
They also believe that this is a rare example of Romanesque round layout in Po Valley with coeval frescoed ambulatory and loggia for women.
