Descrizione

Built in the 15C and with a huge civic bell, this is all that survives of the old Gonzaga castle, which was divided into three parts: the fortified Borgo, with the later destroyed Palazzo Pretorio and the church of Sant’Antonio Abate, surrounded by numerous dwellings; the Rocca, home to the military garrison; and the Revellino, an outpost across the River Oglio.
The Torre Civica served, and still does, as a through tower. Above the entrance is a 17C statue of Our Lady of the Assumption, probably an ex-voto after a plague.
Beside the tower stands Palazzo Municipale, built by the architect Giovanbattista Vergani in the early 19C, with the old Monte di Pietà (institutional pawnbroker’s), conserving traces of 15C frescoes.
