Cavriana castle, now lost, dates probably from the times of Canossa rule and was seemingly destroyed in 1263. The Gonzaga family extended and reinforced the building, including it in the tower communication system that transmitted messages as far as Mantua.
In 1450, Marchese Ludovico employed the architect Giovanni da Padova to strengthen the walls and embellish the mansion. Luca Fancelli and Andrea Mantegna stayed there in the same period. The structure grew to considerable size and became a true palace.
In 1630, Cavriana started to decline because of wars, famine and plague, and the castle was attacked and partially destroyed. Around the mid-18C, under Austrian rule, the crumbling stronghold was demolished.
