Currently being refurbished by the local administration, the oldest part of the complex dates from around 1460-90. Its design can be linked to Luca Fancelli, a Tuscan architect working for the Gonzagas. It is similar in certain details, such as the dentelated stringcourse and swallow-tail merlons joined by a semicircular cornice, to monumental buildings in Mantua’s old city centre and several Dominican residences dotted around the area.
