Also known as the Rocchetta di Sparafucile (a reference to Verdi’s Rigoletto) or Rocchetta di San Giorgio, this is a picturesque stronghold rising above the Strada Legnaghese, just past the bridge of San Giorgio.
The house of Sparafucile was once part of the late-14C defence system protecting access to the bridge and the Rocchetta was immortalised in Andrea Mantegna’s Death of the Virgin, a painting conserved in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
