Cartiera Burgo

The Burgo paper mill, a mature work by Pier Luigi Nervi, features an elegant bridge structure that is reflected in the waters of the Mantua lakes. It is one of the most significant industrial buildings of the 20C and its brilliant architecture was designed in 1960 to house an extraordinarily innovative process that would transform wood pulp into newspaper at a speed of 1,000 metres per minute.

Today, it is unique among the great Italian architect and engineer’s designs and an icon of modern industrial architecture. A significant model by way of its unique function, static clarity and compositional harmony, this remarkable structure fully resolved the client’s functional needs in a hugely expressive design.
