Descrizione

This tower stands on the corner of Piazza Castello, where it was once part of the old castle built in the 11C and converted by Francesco Gonzaga to his residence. It is reached by passing beneath an arch (once surmounted by a tower and drawbridge). The watchtower is on the north side of the rectangular square, surrounded in part by crenellated walls. On the right, it is screened by a row of old houses, while a low wall on the left affords a sweeping view.

After the battles of 1796 and 1859, all that remain of the old castle are the church of San Nicola, extensively altered, and the tower characterised by a pointed dome resting on columns that lessen its almost Oriental appearance, and a sturdy three-storey structure.

Dating from 1563, it was built by Orazio Gonzaga, the first ruler, “in defence of his home and prestige”, as a plaque reads. Following restoration, the tower is now used in summer as a venue for art exhibitions.
