Descrizione

When Carlo II Gonzaga, Prince of Bozzolo, San Martino dall'Argine and Marcaria died in 1555, Pomponesco was passed to his youngest child, Giulio Cesare Gonzaga.
His arrival in 1579 enabled Pomponesco to make an undeniable qualitative leap and it was transformed from a rural village to a town. Giulio Cesare Gonzaga modelled his mini-capital on an urban imprint linked to the aesthetic models of the seigniories of the Po Valley.

Today’s square is a perfect expression of these dynamics and visitors are still greeted by the space where the Prince’s castle and palace stood. Indeed, Palazzo del Principe, demolished in the late 18C, became the fulcrum of this delightful square, off which branch the streets of the quarters in the town centre.
Also on the square is the archpriest’s church of Santa Felicita e Sette Fratelli Martiri.
