Descrizione

Porta Giulia is one of the loveliest Renaissance city gates. Designed by Giulio Romano, it was completed after the great Mannerist’s death, in 1549. The external facade resembles a Roman triumphal gate, complete with marble Doric pilasters, and supports an entablature, with triglyphs and metope. Rising above this is a triangular pediment and two attics, one above the other. The internal facade is an almost specular image. Inside, between the two facades, is a monumental vaulted space, similar to those seen in the ancient Roman baths.
