Descrizione

This Renaissance-style parish church stands asymmetrically along the east side of Piazza Mazzini. Reconstructed to a design by the architect Girolamo, son of Bernardino Facciotto between 1588 and 1590, it was consecrated in 1889 by the bishop of Mantua, Giuseppe Sarto.
The simple and elegant facade is composed of two tiers with pilasters and a pediment surmounted by spires. Beside the round bell-tower is a lantern surmounting a large dome.
The Latin-cross interior is divided into a nave and two aisles by slender columns of Botticino marble. Especially prized are the polychrome marble main altar with a frontal in marble and semi-precious stone inlay, a 1717 work by Andrea Gamba, a marble-worker from Brescia; and the marble balustrade around the altar of the Crucified, featuring birds perched on the branches of fruit trees, produced by Francesco and Domenico Corbarelli in 1703.

The church conserves a rich artistic heritage, collected in Tesoro di Sant’Erasmo, most notably a wooden statue of Our Lady attributed to Clemente Zamara and two paintings by Giuseppe Bazzani (1740-1750) portraying the Souls in Purgatory and an Education of the Virgin Mary.
