Fortress

The old Castel Goffredo fortress was walled in the first half of the 16C by Luigi Gonzaga, Marchese of Castel Goffredo, and dismantled between the late 19C and the early decades of the 20C.

Apart from the urban grid that conveys a sense of its footprint, all that survives of the ring of walls is a section to the north, coinciding with the perimeter of Palazzo Gonzaga-Acerbi; here you can see the scarp of the wall and stone cordon, the tower of Sant’Antonio, incorporated into the Parco La Fontanella and the base of the Torre dei Disciplini, on which were constructed a residential building and Porta Picaloca (rebuilt), the eastern entrance in the walls.
