Known as 'Il Castello', this square tower topped with six Ghibelline merlons is all that remains of the old citadel of Mariana, with an arched vehicular entrance. It once had a drawbridge.
A commemorative white marble plaque inside the tower under the gateway arch reads MCCCCLXVI E IACUBUS DE FRAHONO and is engraved with a rampant lion. The date – 1466 – probably refers to when the citadel was restored under Ludovico Gonzaga.
