Descrizione

This church is of late-Antiquity-early mediaeval origin. The old and new churches, 8C-11C, are testimony to the existence of a district generated by the traffic circulating around the nearby and now-lost port of Sant'Agnese (Contrada San Symonis).

The early religious building first developed in Romanesque style and was transformed in 1593, with another radical renovation in 1775. A tablet inside the church commemorates the brief passage through Mantua of the Scot James Crichton of Eliock and Cluny (1560-1582) known in Italy as the ‘Ammirabile Critonio’.
