Descrizione

With a long facade that continues that of the cathedral, this was formerly the bishop’s residence but refurbished in 1825 and turned into a seminary. The Neoclassical facade and cloister are by Giuseppe Vergani and the main chapel is an interesting creation of the second half of the 20C, with works by Costantino Ruggeri (including a remarkable window in blocks of polychrome glass).

A Giotto-style fresco was transferred here and the back wall is one of the remains of the church of San Michele, erected by Matilda of Tuscany to bury her father. The courtyard conserves sections of the old city walls and a 5C baptistery, behind which recent archaeological excavations have uncovered prehistoric and Longobard finds. The seminary has a rich library, open to the public.
