Descrizione

This church was built in 1429 and partially reconstructed in 1603.

The façade, topped with a pitched roof edged with a serrated cornice, has an architrave entrance in the centre with a wooden door of the mid-18C crowned with a 16C sculpture of a Benedictory Eternal Father. The pointed and two-light windows and the spire of the bell-tower date from the 1920s.

Inside, in the two side chapels, altars by the wall feature interesting late-baroque marble altarpieces. Two 1756 paintings in the presbytery by Giovanni Cadioli (1710-1767) portray the Annunciation and Saints in Adoration of the Precious Blood. In the apse is a Nativity of the Virgin with Joachim and Anne. A series of frescoes belonging to the early church depicting Saints and the Madonna and Child date from the late 14C.

An especially important statue of the Madonna di Carpaneta in polychrome terracotta by an unknown artist can be dated to the late 15C or early 16C. The statue portrays Our Lady of Sorrows with her dead Son in her lap. Legend tells that it was found on the nearby Carpaneta estate during ploughing. It was taken to the church of Bigarello but the following day had disappeared and returned to where it had been found. At this point a decision was taken to transfer the statue to the church of Stradella rather than Bigarello.
