Waldensian church

Construction of this oratory was commenced in 1590 by Tullio Petrozzani, then Prime Minister of the Gonzaga state and primicerius of the church of Sant’Andrea, Count Odalengo and Villadeati in Monferrato and Grand Chancellor of the Ordine del Redentore. The small church was given the name of San Lorenzo Nuovo or San Lorenzino as a reference to the tradition of the old church of San Lorenzo, previously suppressed by Duke Guglielmo.

The elliptical interior was designed by Giuseppe Dattaro (prefect of the Gonzaga works from 1590 to 1595). The painted furnishings were subsequently provided by Antonio Maria Viani and Teodoro Ghisi. Although now stripped of its paintings, the church still conserves original stucco statues portraying the four Evangelists in alcoves.
