This parish church stands on a hill overlooking the plain, inside the walls of the fortified town. In Romanesque style, it originally had just a nave; only in the 18C was it restored and enriched with aisles, chapels and altars.
Vergani designed an extension and rearranged the church in the 19C, but the work was left unfinished. The new facade was added in about 1960 to complement the extension.
The church is a centre of veneration of the body of the Blessed Paola Montaldi, who died in a convent in Mantua after a life of prayer and penitence.
