Erected before the year 1000 to protect the local inhabitants and their economic activities, the castle formed part of the defensive system of the Canossa states, a cornerstone of the defence of their northern borders.
Rebuilt several times, by the Gonzagas among others, it developed its final form in the 14C and 15C. With an outer wall and moat, it included a church and small village, an inner fortress surrounding the keep and a second tower to the south.
