Church of St Maria of Valverde

A jewel of Romanesque-Gothic architecture in the San Benedetto Po countryside, now privately owned. The church formerly belonged to the abbey of Polirone. Its present form dates from restoration in 1445, hence it is almost Renaissance in style.

Inside, the great fresco in the apse depicts the Annunciation, with an Eternal Father on the extrados and busts of prophets on the arch. Of little artistic value, but still an object of devotion, is the statue of a seated Madonna and Child.
