DAY 1
Mantua, the Renaissance Pearl
Morning
The day starts with a visit to the Ducal Palace, formerly seat of the House of Gonzaga and UNESCO World Heritage of Humanity together with Sabbioneta. The itinerary also includes the Castle of San Giorgio with the “Camera degli Sposi”, a masterpiece by Mantegna and a milestone in Western painting. You can have lunch in an inn or typical restaurant.
Afternoon
The day follows the Prince’s Path, wholly dedicated to Renaissance architecture and city planning: Cathedral, Basilica of Sant’Andrea, Lungorio and the Pescherie di Giulio Romano, the San Sebastiano Church and the House of Mantegna, and the City Museum in Palazzo San Sebastiano. The last stop is a “mandatory” visit to Palazzo Te, a masterpiece by Giulio Romano. You can dine and spend the night either in a hotel
in the city or in the nearby towns.
DAY 2
Sabbioneta, the “Ideal City” and surroundings
Morning
Transfer to Sabbioneta
Along the road from Mantua to Sabbioneta you can take a brief detour to see the Torrazzo Gonzaghesco in Commessaggio, in front of the pontoon bridge on the Navarolo channel, and the Sant’Antonio Abate Parish Church in villa Pasquali, one of the Mantua baroque jewels by Antonio Bibiena. Once you reach the Sabbioneta Tourism Office the visit to the Museo Diffuso (ecomuseum) can start. The visit includes also the star-shaped city walls, the Ducal Palace, Palazzo Giardino; the Gallery, the Teatro all’ Antica.
The Chiesa dell’Incoronata, the Synagogue and the Religious Art Museum are also very important. The “Ideal city”, UNESCO World Heritage together with Mantua can also be reached by bicycle following the cycling track “Ciclovia Mantova e Sabbioneta - Città dell’UNESCO”.
Lunch in a local restaurant within the city walls or in a farmhouse restaurant.
Afternoon
The surroundings of Sabbioneta are also worth a visit: the Madonna delle Grazie Sanctuary is less than 1 km away from Sabbioneta, in Vigoreto. Other must-sees along the way are: the small town of Rivarolo Mantovano, the boat bridge in Torre d’Oglio di Marcaria at the Oglio and Po waters meet, and the 15th century rural complex Corte Castiglioni in Casatico di Marcaria. When the evening comes, you can end the Unesco cultural and artistic path with a trip to the Alto Mantovano area. You can dine and stay for the night in a restaurant, farmhouse or hotel in the Alto Mantovano.
DAY 3
Unesco archeological itinerary
The itinerary is completed with a trip to the recently discovered site of Bande di Cavriana, recently added to the Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps Unesco list, and with a visit to the corresponding section of the Archaeological museum in Cavriana.
