From the car park in Viale Mincio, take the sidewalk that runs along the city walls until you reach the crossing in Via San Giorgio. From here, use the sidewalk on the far side, which has wide and level paving. Pass Piazza Castello by the main entrance of Palazzo Ducale, and cross the cobbled street to reach the entrance to Mantua Cathedral, which has an access ramp and a disabled parking space nearby in Piazza Sordello. The inside of the Cathedral is entirely obstacle-free. The route continues along the sidewalk of Piazza Sordello, which overlooks the Palazzo Vescovile. At the junction with Via Cavour, take the Arcades on your right, turn right after emerging from them, and to your left you'll see the Rotonda di San Lorenzo (see also Route No. 2). Once you reach Piazza Mantegna, a flight of stairs leads to the Basilica di Sant' Andrea.
However, an alternative and more accessible entrance exists: this is in Via Leon d'Oro, which is at the top end of the Arcades in Piazza Broletto. The sidewalk is built on the same level – just walk across the cobbled Piazza Leon Battista Alberti to reach the Basilica entrance. From Piazza Mantegna, you can continue walking on the right-hand side of Via Giuseppe Verdi, because a 100-cm access ramp spans the drop in the level of the sidewalk. The route continues at the same pavement level until you reach the cobbled Piazza Canossa, where you’ll find the Church of Santa Maria del Terremoto. Continuing onwards along the sidewalk in Via Domenico Fernelli, you will reach the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, which also has a second, disabled access entrance in Via Domenico Fernelli. The main entrance to this Church is in Via Claudio Monteverdi – note that the disabled visitor entry has a door bell, about 82 cm from the ground. Inside the building, the pathways are wide, seats can be removed to allow space for wheelchairs to manouver, and disabled toilet facilites are available. After visiting Santa Maria della Vittoria, the route heads toward via Claudio Monteversi, the 90- cm high sidewalk and street pavement remain on the same level, and eventually cross Via Cavour, then continues along the left hand side of Via Virgilio. Take a right at the end of this street (noting there is a 4-cm drop here), proceed along the sidewalk, cross the cobbled Via Sant’Anna, and you will reach the Diocesan Museum. This building has an elevator up to the first floor. Disabled toilet facilities are provided, and the entire Museum is spacious, and built entirely on one level. Once you have looked around the Museum, head towards Via Cairoli, and after passing the nearby toilet facilities, the sidewalk comes to an end, and the route continues around the edge of Piazza Virgiliana to the car park in Viale Mincio.
The route can be followed to San Benedetto Po (see Route No. 9).
