Small town south - east of Mantua. The industry of construction materials, together with food, clothing and mechanic industries are the main resources, besides agriculture and cattle breeding.
Serravalle a Po was first mentioned in 845, in a document where Nonantola monastery (near Modena) gave fields to be cultivated to farmers along Po river.
Serravalle a Po today lays between Po river (south) and former Veronese valleys (north); it has about 1700 inhabitants and five small centres: Serravalle a Po, Torriana, Cardinala, Libiola and Caselle.
Torriana was a property of Gonzaga family in XIV century; there, you can see a church (deconsecrated since a long time ago) and elegant XVII-XIX century buildings, which remind of Giulio Romano's style.
In Serravalle Po, S.S. Filippo e Giacomo parish church hosts a recently restored organ; you should visit also S. Cecilia parish church in Libiola.
Cardinala lays where once a marsh was, and it is an agricultural area; rice fields were here already in the middle ages, while archaeological finds from prehistoric, bronze and Roman ages were found.
Caselle lays between Serravalle and Torriana riverbank.
Several noteworthy ancient farms are sprinkled through this territory.
You may cycle along Po river, walk along flood plains, and enjoy Po sandy riverbanks.
