Descrizione

Pegognaga lays south of Po river, not far from Reggio Emilia and Modena territory. It is served by Modena-Brenner highway and Suzzara-Ferrara railway.
According to some documents, it was founded in I century A.C. By Roman Pecunium; it was then destroyed by barbarians and rebuilt in 820. In early XI century, Matilda of Tuscany acquired the village and renovated it. She let build San Lorenzo parish, likely in 1082.
Also Teatro Anselmi (built in 1927),  the library and little archaeological museum - which hosts several Roman finds - are interesting buildings in Pegognaga. Still, there is San Lorenzo regional nature reserve.
In Pegognaga, they do not produce only Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, but also other typical foods, such as agnoli - a variety of ring-shaped pasta stuffed with a mix of meat -, pumpkin tortelli, noodles, salami, pork sausages, sbrisolona - which means crumbly cake in local dialect – and schiacciatina – which is a kind of tasty and flat crispy bread.
Events:
Ancient San Lorenzo festival (second August week) - San Giacomo di Polesine festival (third July week) – Autumn festival, in October.
