Oglio Po

Descrizione

Oglio Po is a water-rich ground conterminal with Cremona territory. It is largely contained inside Parco Oglio Sud, that is lower Oglio river natural park.
Nature lovers will enjoy visiting Garzaia di Pomponesco, where herons nest, and Marcaria peat bogs. Agriculture is very important here.
This is where Po river is a natural border between Mantua and Reggio Emilia, between Lombardy and Emilia Romagna. Here the Gonzaga dukes had their defence strongholds: Viadana marquisate was one of them.
Sabbioneta, also known as the Small Athens, was the capital town of duke Vespasiano Gonzaga. It is the jewel of this area; in 2008 it was inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List. The XVI century walls, Palazzo Ducale and the theatre, which was designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi, will surely fascinate visitors.
Rivarolo Mantovano is another good example of duke Vespasiano's city planning not far from Sabbioneta, and placed in a delightful landscape made of flood plains and poplar groves.
