In 1956, Ms Rosa Leoni, moved by her great devotion to the Virgin Mary, and some acquaintances founded a group to recite the rosary at her home in Via Osti Frassine, in a place called Valdirame.
Over the years, the group felt the need for a place of prayer and a sacred image to venerate. A team of young people went to work and, in 1959-1960, built a shrine on Rosa Leoni’s land. The generosity of the local families made it possible to acquire the statue of Our Lady, which was installed in a great celebratory inauguration.
It then became a major centre of Marian devotion, continuing to this day, for all the inhabitants of Villa Poma and the neighbouring villages. The statue of the Our Lady has, however, been the subject of regrettable events: in 1992, three shots were fired at it and it was cast to the ground and destroyed in 2000. Thanks to the patience and dedication of a local inhabitant, each piece was carefully restored and, after painstaking work, the statue was rebuilt and is again the object of visits, pilgrimages and veneration.
