The tower is all that remains of the old castle (Castrum Medulae) built at the beginning of the second millennium (1010-1020) and extended in the 15C, 16C and 17C under the Gonzagas, who ruled from 1404 to 1691.
The 26m-high tower is the only one in the Mantua area closed on three sides from a height of 8m up. The open side faced the interior of the castle, of which nothing survives. You can clearly see the wooden framework of the staircase that once led to the top. The tower is all that remains of the original mediaeval castle, although its memory lives on in the square layout of the area it once defended.
