Descrizione

In the first half of the 17C, Giulio Cesare and Scipione surrounded the entire town with walls, equipped with bastions and lunettes and with two gates, Porta Cremona and Porta Mantova, now known as Porta San Martino. In the early 20C, the ring of walls, in which an opening known as Barriera Cairoli was created in the late 18C, began to seem pointless, harmful and costly to the community, impeding economic expansion. Several sections were progressively demolished to the south and west, until around 1972 when the Istituto Italiano dei Castelli restored a short section at Porta San Martino. Approximately 800 metres still stand today.
