The ‘castle’, which differs from the times of St Aloysius Gonzaga, is entered by passing under the arch of the so-called Torre dell'Orologio.
This entrance tower was built by the Gonzaga family over an earlier mediaeval tower and the Guelph merlons in the walls are still visible. The drawbridge chains, worked by winches, ran on the two walled stone blocks that can be seen flanking the entrance archway.
