This has always been the last crossing-point of the river Oglio before it flows into the Po and throughout the centuries was under military control. In the middle ages river traffic was controlled from here. On the bank belonging to the province of Mantua the Cremonesi built Montesauro castle, near the mouth of the Fossola which later fell into the hands of the Cavalcabò, and then of the Viscontis, against whom, in the Fourteenth century Gianfrancesco Gonzaga had a bridge built.
In later years, the then left bank (today the right bank, due to changes in the course of the river Oglio) was controlled by a tower, from which the village got its name. At the beginning of 1926 the pontoon bridge was built, the last example of a moving bridge. Not only was it a floating bridge, but it could also navigate with a translation movement from up to down-stream of about 90 meters.
Sunk by the Germans in 1945 it was immediately rebuilt by local volunteers. After years of disputes with the local people and associations dedicated to protecting the territory, due to management costs, the Province of Mantua recently replaced the old bridge with the current one, which isalso floating but has completely different characteristics.
