The first sure records of the complex date from the early 14C and refer to forays by the Scaliger militia, during the war between Brescia and Verona. At that time, the castle was a stronghold with a large ring of walls interspersed with seven round towers and an entrance tower.
Long and repeatedly fought over by the Visconti and Gonzaga families, it underwent demolition, fortification, partial destruction and extension before being destroyed in 1706, during the War of the Spanish Succession.
