La Rocca Fortress

This was once the largest fortification in the State of Mantua. The ruins of the ring of walls, one of the gates and a defensive watchtower, converted to a bell-tower in 17C, survive.

Until the mid-17C, the complex had fortifications with towers, crenellated great walls and a drawbridge. The stronghold was inhabited and had a 12C oratory serving the court called San Biagio in Castello. The fortress is surrounded by wonderful woodland abounding with paths.
