A visit to the nature reserve can be transformed into a leap into the past, a chance to observe the transformations made by man in the surrounding environment. In fact, the marsh, protected as a regional nature reserve, was formed following a project to rectify the Oglio made at the end of the Nineteenth century, it would appear to guarantee navigation on the river. Later, the abandoned meander, (also called dead Oglio) became marshland, fostering the settlement of animals and rare plants typical of marshlands, now very rare, above all in the Plain of Lombardy. Currently this part can be visited “from above” taking the main bank of the Oglio on the right bank (towards Calvatone). The rest of the nature reserve is currently occupied by woods of poplars and broad-leaved trees and by areas involved in the renaturalisation project.
