Church of the Disciplini

The oratory of the Disciplini was founded by St Aloysius Gonzaga’s grandfather to promote the movement of the Confraternità dei Disciplini, established in Castiglione in the early 16C.

The name stems from the penitence practised by its followers who subjected themselves to discipline, i.e. they flagellated themselves every Friday, in memory of the Passion of Jesus.

The doorway of the Renaissance facade bears words commemorating the Eucharist sermon spoken by St Aloysius Gonzaga from the altar of Sant’Anna on 3 March 1590. In 2006, it became the church of Santa Maria dei Disciplini della Pace.
