The history of this church is linked to the arrival of the Celestine Order. This was originally the site of an oratory dedicated to St Anne and granted to Pietro da Morrone for the installation, in 1273, of his monks, called Celestines.
In or around 1479, it was transformed, as recorded by Ippolito Donesmondi, into a church that incorporated the old and original oratory of Sant’Anna in its interior. This generated the far larger church of San Cristoforo. This 15C reconstruction was responsible for the present architecture of the facade that soars high with a fine central section crowned by trilobate Lombard bands and with a round stone doorway, already fully Renaissance in style.
