Risorsaturistica The house of Blessed Osanna Andreasi, Mantua This house is a rare example of a Renaissance Mantua home that has survived virtually intact. The building conserves the formal features of 1475, when it was acquired by Niccolò, father of the Blessed Osanna, and became the Andreasi family home. At that time, the house was redesigned in the manifest Fancelli style still visible on the facade, with its unfaced-brick basement, entrance surmounted by a round arch and three tiers of windows with typical 15C surrounds. Inside, valuable grotesques further enhance the whole.
Risorsaturistica San Giorgio castle, Mantua In 1457, Marchese Ludovico II started to refurbish, modernise and render more hospitable and comfortable an old stronghold erected in the late 14C by Bartolino da Novara. The castle gradually became a splendid residence. Andrea Mantegna, Ludovico II and Luca Fancelli altered its military image, turning rooms that had previously served as military quarters into refined reception salons; the severe exterior was softened with mural decoration. On 16 June 1465, Andrea Mantegna also embarked on the task of leaving an undying memory of Ludovico II’s greatness on the interior and created the Camera Picta, also known as the Camera degli Sposi.
Risorsaturistica Monzambano castle An old feudal road leads to this dark, forbidding castle perched on a hill. With a church inside its walls, it once offered shelter to the local population when threatened, possibly by the Magyars in the 10C. These castles were not residences for the local lords but almost certainly served as lodgings for the garrisons patrolling the area. In times of danger, the locals sought refuge inside, barricading themselves in with their animals and food supplies.
Risorsaturistica Ponti sul Mincio castle The few certain historic records of the castle of Ponti sul Mincio date its construction to between the 12C and 14C. Actually probably built in the 13C, it is attributed to a Scaliger initiative for whom it, along with the castles of Monzambano, Valeggio, Nogarole, Peschiera, Sirmione and others, formed a southwest defence in this area, bordering with the lands of the Visconti and Gonzaga families.
Risorsaturistica Volta Mantovana castle Erected before the year 1000 to protect the local inhabitants and their economic activities, the castle formed part of the defensive system of the Canossa states, a cornerstone of the defence of their northern borders. Rebuilt several times, by the Gonzagas among others, it developed its final form in the 14C and 15C. With an outer wall and moat, it included a church and small village, an inner fortress surrounding the keep and a second tower to the south.
