DAY 1
Alto Mantovano churches
Morning
You leave from Castiglione delle Stiviere, the most important town in the Alto Mantovano, an area well known among worshippers for the “Luoghi Aloisiani” (Aloisian places): first of all the San Luigi Gonzaga Basilica and the Aloisian Museum. Equally important, although totally different, are the Red Cross Museum and Palazzo Bondoni Pastorio. Later on you can reach Cavriana (about 11 km) and take a trip to the ancient Romanesque Beata Vergine Maria Parish Church.
Lunch in a farmhouse.
Afternoon
The trip carries on to Medole, in the Santa Maria Parish Church, but the search for traces of the Romanesque style might continue in the Acquanegra sul Chiese Parish Church. Travel to Mantua
Check-in either at a hotel or another accommodation facility or in the campers and caravan parking area.
A walk in the town centre, followed by an aperitif in a bar or club, a dinner at the restaurant or inn either in the city or in the nearby towns are the best ways to end the day. Overnight stay
DAY 2
Mantua and Grazie
Morning
A walk in the city, including a visit to the Rotonda di San Lorenzo, Sant’Andrea Basilica, the Cathedral and the Museo Diocesano (diocese museum) in Piazza Virgiliana. Lunch in a restaurant, inn or other place in the city or in the nearby towns.
Afternoon
Option A
Departure from Mantua by car (you can load the bike) for a natural trip in the Mincio Valleys up to the Grazie di Curtatone hamlet and then visit to the Santa Maria Sanctuary and the Madonnari (street painters specialised in religious themes) Museum. We recommend to carry on by bike up to Rivalta sul Mincio and possibly visit the Park. Return to Mantua by bicycle.
Dinner at a restaurant, inn or other place
Option B
Travel from Mantua to Grazie by car or caravan (about 10 km), boat trip from the Grazie docks and visit to the hamlet. Round trip to Rivalta sul Mincio by bike. Dinner at a typical restaurant in Grazie. You can either spend the night in Grazie or in the campers parking area or at the Hostel in Rivalta sul Mincio. DAY 3 The Lands of Matilde di Canossa Morning Departure to San Benedetto Po, presently part of the 21 Jewels of Italy towns circuit. Visit to the Polirone monastery complex, where Matilde di Canossa founded the Basilica that still exists today.
The itinerary we suggest carries on through the Romanesque churches whose building Matilde encouraged, that is the Parish Church in San Lorenzo in Pegognaga, the Church of San Fiorentino in Nuvolato, the San Lorenzo Oratory in Quingentole, the Sant’Andrea di Ghisione church in Villa Poma and the parish of the Assunta in Pieve di Coriano.
We recommend carrying on by bicycle towards Quistello (you may also rent a bike in the place): the environment and nature itinerary crosses the Foce Secchia Floodplains museum. Lunch in a farmhouse or restaurant to taste certified typical products like the truffle, the Protected Geographical Indication pear, the Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and the Lambrusco DOC.
Afternoon
Option A
Horseback trip with a fully qualified guide or other activities proposed by the farmhouse. Option B
Visit to the Po Museum, in the Ducal Palace in Revere, a few kilometres away from Quistello, with the original ship mill reconstructed in real scale. Dinner at a farmhouse or restaurant to taste typical truffle-based dishes.
You can spend the night either in an accommodation in the city or in the camper and caravan parking area.
The next day you can keep following the cycling itinerary that borders the Po, provided with signs Garda-Adriatico.
