DAY 1
Alto Mantovano churches

Morning
You leave from Castiglione delle Stiviere, the most important town in the Alto Mantovano, an area well known among worshippers for the “Luoghi Aloisiani” (Aloisian places): first of all the San Luigi Gonzaga Basilica and the Aloisian Museum. Equally important, although totally different, are the Red Cross Museum and Palazzo Bondoni Pastorio. Later on you can reach Cavriana (about 11 km) and take a trip to the ancient Romanesque Beata Vergine Maria Parish Church.
Lunch in a farmhouse.

Afternoon
The trip carries on to Medole, in the Santa Maria Parish Church, but the search for traces of the Romanesque style might continue in the Acquanegra sul Chiese Parish Church. Travel to Mantua
Check-in either at a hotel or another accommodation facility or in the campers and caravan parking area.
A walk in the town centre, followed by an aperitif in a bar or club, a dinner at the restaurant or inn either in the city or in the nearby towns are the best ways to end the day. Overnight stay

DAY 2
Mantua and Grazie

Morning
A walk in the city, including a visit to the Rotonda di San Lorenzo, Sant’Andrea Basilica, the Cathedral and the Museo Diocesano (diocese museum) in Piazza Virgiliana. Lunch in a restaurant, inn or other place in the city or in the nearby towns.

Afternoon
Option A
Departure from Mantua by car (you can load the bike) for a natural trip in the Mincio Valleys up to the Grazie di Curtatone hamlet and then visit to the Santa Maria Sanctuary and the Madonnari (street painters specialised in religious themes) Museum. We recommend to carry on by bike up to Rivalta sul Mincio and possibly visit the Park. Return to Mantua by bicycle.
Dinner at a restaurant, inn or other place
Option B
Travel from Mantua to Grazie by car or caravan (about 10 km), boat trip from the Grazie docks and visit to the hamlet. Round trip to Rivalta sul Mincio by bike. Dinner at a typical restaurant in Grazie. You can either spend the night in Grazie or in the campers parking area or at the Hostel in Rivalta sul Mincio. DAY 3 The Lands of Matilde di Canossa Morning Departure to San Benedetto Po, presently part of the 21 Jewels of Italy towns circuit. Visit to the Polirone monastery complex, where Matilde di Canossa founded the Basilica that still exists today.
The itinerary we suggest carries on through the Romanesque churches whose building Matilde encouraged, that is the Parish Church in San Lorenzo in Pegognaga, the Church of San Fiorentino in Nuvolato, the San Lorenzo Oratory in Quingentole, the Sant’Andrea di Ghisione church in Villa Poma and the parish of the Assunta in Pieve di Coriano.
We recommend carrying on by bicycle towards Quistello (you may also rent a bike in the place): the environment and nature itinerary crosses the Foce Secchia Floodplains museum. Lunch in a farmhouse or restaurant to taste certified typical products like the truffle, the Protected Geographical Indication pear, the Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and the Lambrusco DOC.

Afternoon
Option A
Horseback trip with a fully qualified guide or other activities proposed by the farmhouse. Option B
Visit to the Po Museum, in the Ducal Palace in Revere, a few kilometres away from Quistello, with the original ship mill reconstructed in real scale. Dinner at a farmhouse or restaurant to taste typical truffle-based dishes.
You can spend the night either in an accommodation in the city or in the camper and caravan parking area.
The next day you can keep following the cycling itinerary that borders the Po, provided with signs Garda-Adriatico.

Risorsaturistica Church of St Tommaso Apostolo, Acquanegra sul Chiese Built in the 11C, this church abounds with valuable mosaics and frescoes, large sections of which found beneath Baroque remakes. The frescoes are among the most significant of the period in Lombardy and comprise figures of prophets and Bible characters along the nave. The Incredulity of Thomas at the central altar is attributed to the school of Tintoretto and a painting in the transept to Mattia Preti. The 15C organ is by Graziadio Antegnati. The church has a solid Renaissance bell-tower and the facade dates from 1929.
Risorsaturistica St Aloysius Gonzaga Basilica This church was built in 1608 for Prince Francesco Gonzaga, the Saint’s brother, along with the adjacent Jesuit boarding school, now the Town Hall. Originally called that of the Nome di Gesù, the basilica took the Saint’s name after the relic of the skull of St Aloysius Gonzaga was brought here from Rome; it is still displayed in a grand silver reliquary. The reconstruction of the presbytery and dome dates from 1761. On the exterior is a prothyrum, an unusual feature in the Mantua area. Inside, the nave contains monochrome portrayals of stories from the Saint’s life.
Risorsaturistica Ducal Palace, Revere The first work completed by Fancelli in the Mantua area, Palazzo Ducale was built for Ludovico II in 1444-1478 and based on the seven towers in the Isola di Revere defence system. The construction was in an excellent strategic position as a defensive outpost on the River Po. It has a salon seating 150 and services include a speaker’s table, microphones, projection screen, computer-slide projector, room darkening, broadband and a refreshment area.
Risorsaturistica St Andrea Basilica, Mantua – Co-cathedral 12 June 1472 saw the start of work to build this church, beginning with the facade and a prothyrum that opens with a triumphal arch featuring four pseudo-Corinthian pilasters in the Giant order supporting a classical pediment. The foyer, independent as in the prothyrum of the Pantheon, precedes a colossal nave covered with a majestic vaulted ceiling that was probably a reference to the Temple of Venus in Rome. The large side chapels are an allusion to the Arch of Titus and the effects created by the cella of the Pantheon. A lower church with a Greek-cross plan opens beneath the cross vault, the entrances to which are concealed by the large pillars supporting the dome. The church quickly became an acclaimed Renaissance masterpiece, despite the inevitable alterations and distortions.
Risorsaturistica International Red Cross Museum, Castiglione delle Stiviere This international Red Cross museum in Palazzo Longhi conserves written memories, exhibits and documents recording the creation of the Red Cross movement, conceived by Henry Dunant following the battle of San Martino and Solferino on 24 June 1859 and after seeing the countless victims of the bloody combat. It displays aids for the assistance and transport of the wounded such as wooden litters from the second half of the 19C, 1930 motorised ambulances, stretchers, field surgical instruments and medication materials. It also highlights the work of today’s International Red Cross.
